Although The Wistar Institute is not itself a degree-granting institution, doctoral training can be pursued at Wistar through the Biomedical Graduate Studies (BGS) office at the University of Pennsylvania, or the Cancer Biology Graduate Program jointly overseen by Saint Joseph’s University and Wistar. BGS oversees Ph.D. training in seven graduate groups, including Cell and Molecular Biology and Immunology. The Wistar/Saint Joseph’s University Cancer Biology graduate program integrates laboratory and classroom training at both institutions.

Predoctoral students at Wistar enjoy state-of-the-art shared resources, which include genomics, molecular screening and protein expression, proteomics and metabolomics, bioinformatics, and imaging. Regular career and professional development workshops and programs, along with a robust culture of leveraging basic science discoveries into novel therapeutics, ensure that Wistar trainees are fully prepared for independent careers in academic, industrial, or biotech research enterprises.

The Wistar/Saint Joseph’s University Cancer Biology Graduate Program provides hands-on training in state-of-the-art laboratories from faculty at the cutting edge of cancer research.

BGS provides training and administration through seven graduate groups, some of which have distinct sub-specialty areas.

The Wistar Institute and University of Bologna (Unibo) Cell and Molecular Biology Program fosters scientific and intellectual exchange in research and education between Italy and the United States, while offering Unibo students their three-year Ph.D. training.

The Wistar/Drexel University Cancer Biology Graduate Program trains graduate students in cancer research methods alongside leading scientists at the Institute.
